I took an idea from fellow Vanagon owner, Steve Evans and installed a remote cable to my fridge heat exhaust door. Thanks very much for the idea and advice Steve. A simple generic “choke cable” from the local Lordco auto supply store for $16 did the trick. I easily used a small round chainsaw file to enlarge a hole between the grates to accommodate the body of the cable pull. Wire clippers sized the spring sleeve and the inner cable to the correct lengths. I then used a lighter to heat the cable end in order to melt two holes through the hook up (heat exhaust) door, fed it through, then twisted it to secure it in place.
